What is Cleansing?
Remove Parasites, Candida, Chemicals and Other Toxins from Your Body
Spring cleaning shouldn’t begin and end with your house! Removing waste buildup in the body can give you more vitality and relieve pain, disease and allergy symptoms.
Cleansing is a part of any comprehensive health regime. The numerous toxins in our lives – pollution in the air, pesticides and food preservatives, side effects from pharmaceutical drugs and medical treatments, and chemicals in our water – all tend to leave residue in the body and can contribute to slower metabolism, low immunity, weight gain, chronic pain, tiredness and stress.
Many health professionals, including Stanley Burroughs (originator of the Master Cleanse) believe that every disease and health problem can be traced to toxins that build up the body’s systems and cause congestion, discomfort, and illness. Cleansing the body of these toxins can bring relief of chronic pain, swelling, fatigue, allergies, attention deficit, and improve virtually all aspects of mental and physical health.
Two Kinds of Cleanses: Supplements or Dietary
There are hundreds of different ways to perform a cleanse, depending on the goals, current health and lifestyle of the person doing the cleansing.
Cleansing the body can take several months or a few intense days. Some cleanses require a complete overhaul of your diet, while others don’t.
Most cleanses work on the liver and/or colon, but there are special cleanses that focus on clearing parasites out of the system, improving the body’s pH balance, eliminating candida and restoring beneficial bacteria to the digestive system, weight loss, drawing out the toxins associated with arthritis or gout, or other goals.
How Often Should We Cleanse?
It is often recommended to do a fast or cleanse of one kind or another at least two or three times a year. Some people prefer to cleanse continuously, by conscious attention to the content and acid-alkali balance of their diet or by using supplements.
How Will I Feel During a Cleanse?
Most people feel dramatically better, lighter, and happier during and after cleanse. Some people, on the other hand, find that cleansing releases more than physical toxins: it also results in an emotional cleanse. It is not uncommon to experience bouts of anger, sadness, or other strong emotions during cleansing, while toxic accumulation is in the process of leaving your body.
The liver (one of the primary organs involved in the storage of unused materials like toxins) is related, in Chinese Medicine and in the mind-body work of Louise Hay, to anger. Anger is commonly reported during cleansing, as emotional toxins leave the body with the physical ones.
Cleansing with Supplements
Fiber, Enzyme and Juice Cleanses Assist With Energy and Weight Loss
Why Use a Supplement to Cleanse?
Dietary cleanses are generally gentler than cleanses that require supplements. But supplement cleanses can make all the difference for those who are too busy or don’t wish to overhaul their diet. Most supplement cleanses involve only minimal changes to the diet, and are still effective while you eat whatever food is normal for you.
Types of Supplements that Help Cleanse the Body
- Enzymes
- Fiber
- Juice Supplements
- Herbs
The Power of Enzymes
The raw food movement is driven by its emphasis on consuming foods that contain live enzymes, which are damaged at cooking temperatures. Enzymes are needed to break down food and to process toxins.
People with arthritis, chronic pain or stiffness can benefit from taking more enzymes – whether in their food or by taking an enzyme supplement. Enzymes taken between meals (several hours away from food) break down accumulated toxins that contribute to inflammation or pain. Enzymes taken with meals improve digestion and aid in cleansing the digestive tract.
Fabulous Fiber
Fiber is a form of carbohydrate that the human body is not able to digest for energy. As such, it passes through the human digestive tract unchanged. Insoluble fiber, such as that found in most kinds of bran and in psyllium husks, acts as bulk and encourages the colon to move – flushing out by-products of metabolism and old toxins that are released during a cleanse. Apples are high in pectin and other fiber, explaining the proverbial “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.”
Juice Supplements
Vegetable juices are one of the most simple and natural ways to cleanse the inside of the body, helping to draw out toxins while supplying minerals, antioxidants and vitamins.
Most packaged juices, however, do not contain the vital energy or the total nutrients that are available in fresh juices. Packaged and bottled juices may be pasteurized or contain preservatives, increasing acidity and robbing them of nutritional value and of their value in a cleanse. Read labels closely for the addition of “junk juices” like grape, apple, or pear that add very little in the way of nutrients and whose only function is to sweeten the juice.
Herbs
Most herbs and spices support the immune system and promote health. Several are useful in cleansing.
- garlic - parasite cleanse. In pets, garlic taken internally discourages fleas as well as worms and other digestive parasites.
- cilantro - chelates (draws out) heavy metals
- peppermint, ginger, cinnamon, fennel, anise, cardamom, cayenne – these herbs and spices cleanse the digestive system, speed metabolism and improve digestive function
- milk thistle - promotes liver cleansing
Healthy Colon Cleanse
Colon cleansing naturally is much easier than dealing with the long-term potential problems that a build-up of waste may lead to. The modern diet, rich in heavy, processed foods, tends to contribute to an accumulation of toxins that recycle back into the bloodstream, and negatively effect other organs. A healthy colon cleanse can help the body eliminate waste that may have been sitting in the colon for days, weeks, and even months. Through fasting, a proper diet, and colon cleansing herbs, the body can began moving towards optimal health, and away from disease, fatigue, and weakness.
Who Benefits from Colon Cleansing Naturally?
When food sits in the colon for a long period of time, it has the chance to ferment and become rancid. Waste can mix with other bacteria and chemicals, creating newer and more dangerous toxic substances. Eventually, either indirectly or directly, disease may manifest, as it is believed by many naturopaths that illnesses ranging from depression to colon cancer could be the result of toxicity in the body. Focusing on colon health through a colon cleansing diet and herbs may contribute to the prevention of myriad health problems.
Almost everyone can benefit from a healthy colon cleanse, as it will improve digestion, immunity, and overall well-being. There are specific signs that colon cleansing may be necessary. In a perfect human waste management system, bowel movements would happen every 12 hours with ease, stools would be light in color and density, and hardly smell at all. Symptoms such as poor digestion, gas, bad breath, skin blemishes, fatigue, mental sluggishness, arthritis, and headaches may represent a state of toxicity from waste build-up.
Beginning a Healthy Colon Cleanse with Fasting
Colon cleansing naturally should begin with a one or two day detox fast. The evening before fasting, drink a gentle colon cleansing tea, such as dandelion. Also, prepare a fiber mix, by adding equal parts of oat bran and flax seed to water, stirring, and leaving overnight. The next morning, begin the day with two tablespoons of the fiber mix, blended in a glass of fresh fruit juice or water, as well as warm water mixed with fresh lemon juice. Mid-morning, drink two ounces of aloe vera juice in a glass of fresh fruit juice. Throughout the rest of the day, drink juices, teas made from colon cleansing herbs, and either homemade or store-bought vegetable broth. Also, be sure to drink eight glasses of water. If fasting for two days, follow the same schedule for the second day. Beginning with a fast is the most effective method of colon cleansing naturally as it will quickly and efficiently rid the body of toxins.
The Colon Cleansing Diet for a Healthy Colon Cleanse
After fasting, following a colon cleansing diet will help the body almost completely eliminate excess waste. This diet can be easily modified to suit the individual’s needs. Begin with primarily raw foods for one to two weeks. This includes raw fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, raw goat cheese, and minimally processed vegetable oils. Raw foods will provide the body with a wealth of enzymes, and also lessen the energy needed for digestion.
After this preliminary period, compose from one-quarter to one-half of the diet with raw foods. Eat plenty of all types of vegetables, and beneficial fruits – apples for pectin, bananas for nutrients and prebiotics, berries and grapes for antioxidants. Also, focus on fiber, eating plenty of whole grains such as oats, brown rice, and wheat-based pastas and breads, and yogurt for the beneficial bacteria, necessary for healthy intestinal flora. The colon cleansing diet also of course requires plenty of liquids, including water and fresh fruit juices such as apple, papaya, pineapple, and carrot.
During and after a healthy colon cleanse, try to minimize sugar, refined and processed foods, and hydrogenated oils. Also, be careful not to consume too much saturated fat, which is difficult for the body to break down, or too many dairy products, which create extra mucous in the colon.
